OC Public Works presented the Project to the City of Laguna Beach Planning Commission on May 18, 2022. The Commission approved the Design Review and Coastal Development Permit which authorizes OC Public Works to construct the Project within City jurisdiction. On June 7, 2022, the Board of Supervisors approved the Construction Contract to Ames Construction. Project construction is anticipated to start Fall 2022 as a result of the City’s construction moratorium during the 2022 Sawdust Art Festival.
Background
During heavy storms in February 2019, approximately 265 feet of the channel wall closest to Laguna Canyon Road collapsed. An investigation determined that an emergency repair was needed to maintain flood protection to the community. In March 2019, a temporary repair was implemented to fix the collapsed wall and bracing was added to prevent additional failures. The project will replace the temporary repairs with a permanent solution for the channel.
Project Scope
The Laguna Canyon Channel Replacement Project, between Laguna Canyon Frontage Road and Woodland Drive, consists of removing and replacing the rectangular concrete channel, reconfiguring small concrete pedestrian crossings, removing and replacing softscape and hardscape that may be damaged or removed in order to construct the Project, and removing trees within the Project limits that pose a risk to the channel.
